TAP TAP TWIST & TURN:
A WRITING SLOWDANCE WITH INKY & ASLAN
Published: 28 June 2021 | Application Deadline: 27 July 2021
We are very happy to announce our first tanzschreiber writing workshop, starting in August 2021. Inky and Aslan have crafted a series of writing assignments which give you the opportunity to work on your expressive writing skills in writing about the Berlin dance scene.
You will receive four assignments (approx. 500 words each) in which you will write about dance. Each assignment has a brief, a word-count, and a deadline (you will have two weeks to complete each assignment). Once you submit your completed assignment, you will send it, along with any questions, to an editor. You will receive written feedback on each assignment and then be invited to book a 30 minute Zoom call for each assignment for face-to-face feedback and support. You will also be invited to join us for a group event during the season. This will either take place on Zoom or live, depending on the situation at the time. Each participant will have some of their writing published in a special publication made at the end of the project.
The course is run and designed by Aslan (they/them) and Inky Lee (she/her). Each participant will receive feedback from both Aslan and Inky during the course. You are not obliged to purchase tickets to see performances to be able to take part in the course. You can also write about dance you have seen in the past, or your ideas about dance in general.
The aim of the course is to support people in writing about dance through mentorship and editing. In order to be as flexible as possible for different approaches and needs, the course is based around one-to-one feedback and support for each writer. Our aim is to help you express yourself fully and think about writing about dance in new ways. We are committed to welcoming diverse voices and creating an enjoyable and supportive environment for all participants.
In August 2016 Tanzüro Berlin launched the online review platform tanzschreiber.de in the frame of the ERDF project „Attention Dance“. This platform supplements the content of the magazine tanzraumberlin with current reviews of Berlin dance performances. In the following project „Attention Dance II“ from 2018 until 2020, alternating teams of writers regularly published texts about the Berlin’s dance scene (live and online events), texts were translated German/English and English/German, and the topic of art and cultural criticism and dance criticism in particular was examined from different perspectives in a serial accompanying event. Within the new project „Perspektive Tanz“ from 2021 to 2023, different teams of authors will continue writing regularly about dance, and the tanzschreiber module will be expanded by a workshop programme, open to various levels of writing experience, in the sense of giving the opportunity to interested people to learn how to write about dance.
Who can apply?
Anyone over 18 years old and living in Berlin who has an interest in writing about dance is warmly invited to apply. You don’t have to have previous experience or an education in dance or writing. As the course is mostly one-on-one, tasks can be adapted to your level. The focus will be on expressive writing. This course is not intended as a method to improve your English profiency.
The course is free of charge to participants. There is only funding available, however, for six participants to take part per season. We would therefore ask you only to apply if you can commit to completing the course.
A long-list of participants will be selected by Aslan and Inky Lee, and by Anja Goette and Antonia Gersch of Tanzbüro Berlin. Participants who are unanimously selected will receive a place on the course. The remaining places will be selected by lottery from the long-list.As the number of participants is strictly limited due to funding, we cannot guarantee you a place on the course. It is our aim to welcome diverse voices to the project, including a broad range of experiences and writing styles and goals.
